Phoenix Rainbow Lions Club and Children’s Cancer Network Host an Evening Honoring Kids and Families

The second annual “A Night to Shine: Capes & Courage” gala, hosted by the Phoenix Rainbow Lions Club together with the Children’s Cancer Network, took place on November 16 at Dolce Events in Scottsdale. Families, supporters, and community partners filled the venue for a program centered on children facing cancer and the work being done to support them.

Spotlight on the Children and Their Families

One of the evening’s main segments featured the children and siblings invited by the Children’s Cancer Network. Each walked the runway in superhero-themed outfits as the emcee shared a brief look into their story. Introductions covered where the children are in their treatment, recent milestones, and how their families have been managing the past months or years.

Some children are approaching important cancer-free anniversaries. Others are in the middle of treatment. Several siblings were highlighted as well, recognizing how much they contribute to their family’s day-to-day rhythm. Hearing each story shared this way helped the audience understand what these families manage on a daily basis, far beyond the medical routines.

A Parent Shares What the Journey Has Looked Like

A parent whose child benefitted from the assistance provided by the Children’s Cancer Network spoke about his family’s experience. He recalled the day they discovered the tumor, the immediate steps at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and the long stretch of treatments that followed.

His remarks provided insight into the difficulties families face, the emotional ups and downs of the process, and the deep gratitude felt for the support received along the way. It gave the room a real sense of how dramatically a family’s world can change after a diagnosis.

Community Leaders Add Perspective

Representatives from Lions District 21 and the Philippine Honorary Consulate were present during the program. Honorary Consul Jenny Vijungco spoke about the need for more Filipino participation in stem-cell donor registries and how the lack of representation affects Filipino children searching for matches. Her message aligned with the event’s focus on community involvement and practical support.

Recognitions and Support Efforts

The Phoenix Rainbow Lions Club acknowledged several members, sponsors, and partners throughout the evening. The recognitions highlighted the work people have been contributing, including service, consistency, and the time they dedicate to the club’s growing list of community projects.

During the fundraising segment, organizers outlined specific examples of what donations support, such as:

  • Food assistance for families facing financial strain
  • Gas cards for frequent hospital travel
  • Counseling access for parents, children, and siblings
  • School supplies for children in treatment and their brothers and sisters
  • Holiday support for families balancing emotional and financial pressure
  • Camp opportunities through Children’s Cancer Network programs

The examples helped show how the funds raised are used throughout the year.

Takeaway From the Evening

The “Capes & Courage” gala served as an annual fundraising event for both the Phoenix Rainbow Lions Club and the Children’s Cancer Network. The evening focused on real families, the challenges they face, and the work being done to support them.
