“The Voices” Concert Revives Classics from the 70s, 80s, and 90s with a Filipino Flair
On November 16, 2024, music enthusiasts gathered at The Venue in Mesa, Arizona, for this unique event, a first of its kind in the Arizona Filipino community. Organized by Runway Productions in collaboration with Hawk Productions and under the musical direction of Mr. Arman Galang, the event showcased the incredible talents of five Filipino artists: Dessa, Michael Laygo, Sol Glass, Marian “The Visayan Diva”, and Kata. Their performances paid homage to iconic songs from three memorable decades, highlighting the universal appeal of music that transcends cultures and generations.
The Venue, known for its inviting atmosphere and top-notch acoustics, set the perfect stage for this musical journey. Attendees praised the location for its comfortable seating and intimate setting, which allowed for a more personal connection between the artists and the audience.
As the lights dimmed, the live band struck the first chords, and the crowd was transported back in time. The evening was a roller coaster through the 70s, 80s, and 90s, each segment carefully crafted to capture the essence of the era. What made the experience even more special was the artists’ commitment to authenticity—not just in sound but in style.
The 70s: Disco Fever Reignited
The concert kicked off with a burst of energy as all five artists took the stage in full 70s regalia. Marian, Dessa, and Kata especially stood out with their colorful afros, psychedelic outfits, bell-bottom pants, and platform heels, embodying the spirit of disco. Their renditions of classics like “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, “Boogie Wonderland” by Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition,” and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” had the audience dancing in their seats.
With Michael Laygo leading the charge, the group’s performance of “Disco Inferno” by The Trammps was a standout moment, his voice perfectly capturing the groove of the era. The group’s rendition of Santana’s “Oye Como Va” added a Latin flair to the evening, engaging the crowd with infectious rhythms.
The 80s: Pop and Power Ballads
Transitioning into the 80s, the artists didn’t miss a beat. Dessa appeared in a leather zipper jacket with a sequined collar, capturing the edgy fashion of the time. Kata evoked Madonna’s iconic 80s look with wavy blonde locks adorned with a large black bow, wearing a gold jumpsuit that reflected the bold fashion trends of the decade. Her performance of Madonna’s “Borderline” was instantly recognizable, setting the mood for the rest of the 80s set. She captured the essence of the song, bringing back memories for many in the audience.
Sol Glass sported a retro tracksuit with gold stripes, an outfit that resonated with those who remember the style of the time. The setlist featured high-energy numbers like “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You” by Gloria Estefan, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston, and Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” A memorable duet between Michael Laygo and Dessa on “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” was a delightful throwback to “Dirty Dancing,” a film that had a big influence on pop culture at the time.
The 90s and Beyond: Emotional Highlights
The final segment delved into the 90s and more recent hits. Dessa delivered a powerful rendition of Destiny’s Child’s “Stand Up for Love,” wrapping the audience in a moment of shared emotion. Sol Glass’s performance of “Ikaw Nga” from the Philippine series “Mulawin” was mesmerizing, his voice weaving a tapestry of melody that left listeners spellbound.
Marian touched hearts with Gladys Knight & the Pips’ “Neither One of Us,” her soulful interpretation striking a chord with classic R&B lovers. Near the end of the concert, the artists delivered a collective performance of Kenny Loggins’ “Footloose,” wrapping up the evening and prompting everyone to join in and celebrate the joy of music.
A Concert with a Cause
Adding to the significance of the evening, “The Voices” concert had a philanthropic purpose. Proceeds from the event will be used to assist communities in the Bicol region of the Philippines affected by a recent typhoon, as well as supporting the Phoenix Barangay Lions Club, POWGALC Phoenix One World Global Artists Lions Club, and Phoenix Rainbow Lions Club. The collaboration underscored the power of community and the positive impact of the arts.
