Fil-Am Founded Theater Company Champions Diversity and Representation

Order Chaos Theater Company (OCTC) is making waves in the local performing arts community with its commitment to diversity, representation, and powerful storytelling. As it prepares to open James Goldman’s The Lion in Winter on January 10, 2025, OCTC shines as a beacon of inclusion and creativity in the Arizona Filipino community and beyond.

A Theater Born from Passion

Founded in 2022 by brothers Jean-Paoul and Mark-Alan Clemente, OCTC was born from a desire to bring stories that reflect the true diversity of their community. “It started as a conversation about what community theaters could do differently,” Mark shared. “We wanted a space where representation wasn’t just an idea but a reality.” This idea was inspired during a pivotal dinner with friends, where the question of creating a theater that truly embodied representation and inclusion first emerged. This conversation turned into action when a supporter offered to fund their first year, allowing OCTC to debut as a nonprofit organization.

The name “Order Chaos Theater” itself is deeply rooted in philosophy. Jean-Paoul explained, “The name comes from Aristotle’s idea that out of chaos, we find order, and through that order, we create art.” For the Clemente brothers, this concept not only reflects their artistic vision but also life itself. “It’s about evolving and discovering beauty even in the midst of chaos,” Jean-Paoul added. This philosophy shapes OCTC’s commitment to pushing boundaries and amplifying voices that often go unheard.

The Clemente brothers, first-generation Filipino Americans, credit their cultural roots for their artistic vision. “Filipinos are natural storytellers,” Jean-Paoul explained. “It’s in our DNA to create and perform, whether through music, dance, or theater.” This passion, nurtured by their family’s love for the arts, continues to fuel OCTC’s mission.

A Play for All Families

The Lion in Winter tells the story of King Henry II, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their children as they battle over power and inheritance. While set in medieval England, the themes of love, betrayal, and ambition resonate universally. “At its heart, it’s a family drama,” said Jean-Paoul. “Anyone watching will see parts of their own family—the love, the conflicts, the complexities.”

Kristen Therese Chua, who plays Alais Capet, brings a unique perspective to the cast as a second-generation Filipina American. “Storytelling is my way of connecting to my roots while exploring universal human experiences,” Kristen shared. Her diverse educational background—a BFA in Acting with minors in Psychology and English from Oklahoma City University, and further studies in Narrative Studies at Arizona State University—reflects her dedication to honing her craft and enriching her narrative perspective. Despite a family legacy of pursuing careers in medicine, like her parents, Kristen chose to carve her own path, embracing the performing arts as her calling and drawing strength from those who inspired her along the way. Her work reflects OCTC’s mission of valuing talent and individuality over conventional expectations.

A Commitment to Inclusion

OCTC’s approach to casting and storytelling sets it apart. “We believe in blind casting,” Mark emphasized. “It’s not about fitting a type; it’s about finding the best person for the role. “The more colors on our palette, the more beautiful the picture.”” Jean-Paoul added. This philosophy extends to their partnerships with local nonprofits, such as their recent nonprofit collaborations aimed at supporting educational initiatives and community outreach.

An Invitation to the Community

OCTC’s productions are more than just performances—they’re celebrations of identity, resilience, and community. “We want audiences to leave feeling seen and inspired,” Mark said. With The Lion in Winter running from January 10 to 26, 2025, at The Kax Stage in the Herberger Theater Center, the community has a chance to experience this vision firsthand.

Tickets for The Lion in Winter are available at orderchaostheater.org and herbergertheater.org. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience a compelling tale of family and power dynamics brought to life by a cast and crew dedicated to authentic storytelling and representation.

Those interested in performing are encouraged to take the first step by submitting a resume and headshot via the casting tab on their website, orderchaostheater.org. As Jean-Paoul passionately put it, “Come join us. Be part of the inclusion, the representation, and the stories that deserve to be told.”

OCTC invites actors from all backgrounds to step into the spotlight, with a focus on inclusivity and opportunity. Mark described their process as one that prioritizes finding talent with the essence and passion needed to bring a character to life. “Our doors are open to everyone who wants to join the OCTC family,” he shared. “Submit your resume, let us see your talent, and be part of creating something remarkable.” Their annual season casting call in the spring allows actors to audition for multiple productions, ensuring thoughtful selection and plenty of preparation time for each role. Whether seasoned or new to the stage, OCTC provides opportunities for everyone willing to bring their talent to the community.
